Kite Festival flies under the radar

For 14 years, Vaishnav Parivar (NZ) Inc. has organised an Indian Kite Festival in Avondale and, with over 9,000 attendees, it’s fair to say, this festival flies under the radar.

Held in January each year, brightly coloured kites, spools and coloured threads paint the sky as the ancient tradition of kite flying returns to Eastdale Reserve. Enjoy kite flying, stage performances, face painting, fun rides, food stalls and more.

In India, the festival celebrates Uttarayan – the day on the Hindu calendar when the winter season officially ends. Every year on this day, various states in the country like Gujarat organise kite festivals. These festivals attract expert kite-makers and flyers, not only from India, but also from around the world.
