I live on Whakawhiti Loop – a medium density development off Trent Street. Nearby, at the start of the Waterview Shared Path, is a small section containing a dilapidated building. Originally a Pigeon Racing Club, the building and site is no longer used for this purpose. The only person I ever saw coming out of the building told me it is only used for storage.
Discussions with other locals has reinforced my belief that the site could be transformed into a public space for the Avondale community: a small kids playground/pocket park. With all the new medium and high-density housing going in nearby the town centre, there is nowhere for kids to play close-by.
After some research, I understand the land is owned by KiwiRail, and possibly Land Information NZ (LINZ) and someone pays to lease the site. As far as I understand, KiwiRail are open to the land being used for something that is of more benefit to the community, however they don’t own all the land or the building, so it’s a bit complicated!
I’d love to hear from anyone who thinks they can help progress this idea. Please get in touch via About Us.
